Newcastle, WA became an incorporated city in 1994, but was a destination for homeowners long before its incorporation. Therefore, the City is served by two school districts. Students in Newcastle can attend schools in either the Issaquah School District or the Renton School District. The boundary between the two runs north to south, just west of the Coal Creek Parkway. There are also two schools located in Newcastle City proper, the award-winning Newcastle Elementary and Hazelwood Elementary. Newcastle Elementary is operated by the Issaquah School District and Hazelwood Elementary is operated by the Renton School District.
Issaquah School District is typically recognized as having high-quality public schools; however, the principal of Newcastle Elementary, which won a state award for performance in 2014, recently retired, prompting the Issaquah District superintendent to launch a search for her replacement. In addition to Newcastle Elementary, Maywood Middle School and Liberty High School are served by the Issaquah School District. Maywood Middle serves grades 6-8 and Liberty High serves grades 9-12. Neighborhoods slated for the Issaquah School District include the Highlands at Newcastle, Lake Boren, the Trails at Newcastle, China Creek, the Reserve at Newcastle and the Golf Club at Newcastle.
The Renton School District serves not only Hazelwood Elementary but McKnight Middle and Hazen High School. McKnight serves students in grades 6-8 and claims that one-third of its students typically make the honor roll, achieving a grade point average of 3.2 or higher. Hazen High serves students grades 9-12. Neighborhoods slated for the Renton School District include Lake Washington Ridge and Hazelwood.
